Kicking off this week with a track from my favourite Balkan obsessed producer Dunklebunt and a nice mellow remix of global fusionists Watcha Clan before Woon gives a great melancholic twist to Olive's pop smash You're Not Alone. Discovery of the week for me is a great young jazz label hailing from Manchester, called Gondwana. Two albums strong they are shaping up to be one of the freshest new labels to appear on the jazz scene for a while and Nat Birchall's new album in particular has been on repeat and flooding my living rooms with spiritual vibes all week, great stuff.
I had to drop some more tracks from a couple of great albums of recent note. Check out the downtempo side of the versatile Karizma and more beautiful Angolan 60s/70s pop from the excellent new project on Out Here Records, Comfusoes 1. Stones Throw can usually be relied on to hold down the quality and Dam-Funk is doing just that with his synth funk soul killer, 'On and On'.
Cessa is a great sounding new project from a couple of mystery producers but there is no mystery about the quality of the music, great bassline, techno fusions - look out for the ep, highly recommended. The boss of one of the homes of avant-garde electronica, No Nine has just released his last album and here is my favourite track from it, the wonderfully titled, 'Chimps in Space Part I and II'. Terror Danjah is showing his versatitlity with a new release on Planet Mu, due soon and I've picked up on the soulful synths of Zumpi Hunter.
Rather randomly I then threw in a couple of recent global discoveries with Franco & Le Tout Puissant OK Jazz. Franco was one of the most prolific and influential African musicians ever having recorded literally thousands of tracks and here he gives us his take on the sound of Cuba as does the following track from Rhany but in his own inimitable North African way. Just to randomise this weeks show even more I then finsish off with a great quirky disco style cut up from Labulo due out soon on Eklektik.
