Another episode this week pushing the global side of my musical world, kicking off with an incredible track from 3 oud playing Palestinian brothers otherwise known as Le Trio Joubran, amazing. The mysterious Clutchy Hopkins follows with one of his dubbier creations closely followed by a killer rework of Soldier, my favourite track from Vadim's recent album. Keeping it urban I then drop my hip hop track of the year without a doubt, K'naan's, America - the maddest break of the year and some Somalian lyrical flavour - just BRILLIANT.
Gangbe Brass Band are from Benin and mixing the local rhythms with some nice soul jazz touches and putting most of the recent brass band efforts in Europe to shame. Manteca was an old school Cuban percussionist and also a comedian and his Abacua track is a great example of original drum and bass. I couldn't resist dropping The Sausage a cheeky calypso track from the well named Baldhead Growler(what was his mum thinking) that makes me crack me up every time I hear it, full of great, none too subtle double entendres.
My recent fascination with the Congolese legend Franco continues, so check another track from the excellent Stern's compilation (which includes great sleeve notes). Brownout are another Grupo Fantasmo offshoot exploring the scuzzier more phychedelic side of latin funk, look out for the album soon. After last weeks little global vocal showcase I highlight a couple more amazing vocalists - the African flamenco soul jazz sound of Buika and the Portugese/Cape Verdean sweetness of Sarah Tavares.
I'd forgotten about my Max Richter albums until I got sent a great new compilation exploring the collision of the classical and electronic worlds compiled by Me Raabenstein - a really interesting listen, as you would expect. Taken by Trees is a great new Swedish Global Folk Poptronica project and Lusine is coming through with some great new atmospheric cinematic beats from his Seattle home. I finished the show with a Les McCann penned jazz dance classic from Anita Moore forthecoming on BBE sometime this year.
